Come, and let us return unto the LORD: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up. Hosea 6:1
This Old Testament passage applies to Israel. But surely the Lord does not tear or smite people in his church.
This sentiment might be believed by the young, but soon life will teach you otherwise. For often salvation is presented as protection against the harsh realities of life. Perfect health, trouble free marriages, happy children, and of course, prosperity are ours, if we have enough faith. Many modern preachers promise these things if we just follow their secrets of success.
One by one, their lies are exposed. Reality is forced upon us. Even a "good prayer life" does not suffice to protect us. Many are torn and smitten.
Those who teach the guaranteed happy life have an explanation for all suffering. It is the result of lack of faith. If the blind only had enough faith, they could be healed. If enough money was contributed, people would be prosperous.
But the faithful are torn and smitten. Some are killed.
When I hear the term "Death of a thousand cuts", I think, only a thousand? Live long enough and you will pick up more than that.
Salvation--being born again--is the beginning of our lives in Christ. His healing will be His gift in the life to come.
