For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. 1 Thessalonians 5:3
This is a very familiar passage, read and referred to often. But I have a question. To whom does it refer? Surely to the non-Christian world, one might say. But we are descending into a time when war and danger are on peoples' minds.
Do you know anyone who is now saying "peace and safety"? Certainly it will not describe the experience of those in the Great Tribulation. So, I ask again, what peace and safety?
We do not have it now. Tribulation saints will not have it. So who does that leave?
If indeed these proclamations are made by those outside the church (and I am just supposing this for the moment) when will there be a period of peace and safety? Paul says there will be one.
Our president is not promising it to his followers. Let me just suppose that the time Paul mentions is ushered in by Antichrist, as pictured in Revelation 6:2.
And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow, and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.
Other places in scripture tell us that this white horse conqueror will overcome quickly. Resistance will be futile. No protracted wars here. So now, here is the opportunity to cry "peace and safety". Like Chamberlain in WW2, a promise of peace is promoted, and apparently this one lasts about as long.
The next rider, on the red horse, "takes peace away". Impossible if there is no peace. A new sheriff is coming to town, bringing a very brief period of peace; but what follows this lull will be the most terrible time the earth has ever seen.
